Empowering Communities: The Journey of RC Entebbe Base

The inception of the Rotary club of Entebbe Base can be traced back to the astute observation and foresight of PDG Robert Waggwa Nsibirwa, the Third Deputy Prime Minister of Buganda Kingdom and Assistant Governor of the Rotary Club of Entebbe in 2009. At that time, Entebbe, a vibrant town with a diverse population, had only one Rotary club with a modest membership of around 50 individuals. Recognizing the potential for Rotary to make a more significant impact in the community, PDG Bob Nsibirwa proposed the establishment of additional Rotary and Rotaract clubs to better serve the burgeoning population.

Nsibirwa’s vision was met with enthusiasm and determination from key individuals within the Rotary community, such as Jeff Kayongo and George Bush. Together, they embarked on a mission to nurture the growth of new clubs, recognizing the need to cater to different segments of the Entebbe population, including employees at the airport and students in various educational institutions.

One of the early successes of this initiative was the formation of RC Nkumba, with support from Kayongo and other dedicated Rotarians. Simultaneously, efforts were made to establish Rotaract clubs in institutes such as fisheries, survey, and even at the airport, under the guidance of PAG Bush. These endeavors aimed to provide platforms for service and fellowship tailored to the unique needs and schedules of different groups within the community.

As time progressed, Nsibirwa’s commitment to expanding Rotary’s presence in Entebbe only grew stronger. When he assumed the role of District Governor of Rotary District 9211 (before its subsequent split into D9213 & D9214), he continued to champion the cause of establishing new clubs. He particularly emphasized the importance of a club for the 3500-strong workforce at Entebbe airport, recognizing the potential for Rotary to engage with and serve this sizable community.

Despite facing challenges, including the unforeseen obstacles presented by the COVID-19 pandemic, the dedication of Rotary leaders and enthusiasts remained steadfast. The desire to establish a Rotary presence at the UN Base, initially proposed during Nsibirwa’s tenure as District Governor, faced logistical hurdles. However, through perseverance and strategic collaboration, the idea eventually came to fruition.

Individuals like Rtn Zaina Ndora and Rtn Barbara Nekesa played instrumental roles in overcoming these challenges and driving the establishment of the Rotary Club of Entebbe Base forward. Their leadership, combined with the unwavering support of the Rotary District leadership, paved the way for the club’s successful chartering.

Today, the Rotary Club of Entebbe Base convenes weekly at Rosemary Courts, offering a welcoming environment for members from diverse backgrounds to gather, collaborate on service projects, and foster meaningful connections. Through the collective efforts of visionary leaders and passionate individuals, RC Entebbe Base continues to uphold Rotary’s mission of service above self, leaving a lasting impact on the Entebbe community.
